Here you can find some examples for medieval turnshoes which I made. All are made of vegetable tanned leather and sewn with linen or hemp thread.

What are the different types of medieval shoes?

Pretty interesting question but hard to answer.

Last year I was working on multiple short summaries for the different types for the 13th century. I have published my results in the german Mittelaterforum, so everyone could use them for free.

Now you can find these summaries also in the download area. The naming scheme was inspirired by Marquita Volken¹.

Shoetype: Type Schlei

Low cut buckle-fastened shoe with deep pointed instep vent - 2. quarter 13th century till 1. quarter 14th century.

Description

Low cut shoe with a deep, pointed instep vent and a narrow extended tabs for attaching a buckle and a strap to close the shoe over the instep point.

The upper is cut in one piece with possible extensions for the straps. The closing seam is on the medial side of the shoe. The heel is often raised a little bit.
