I have been asked by Gerald von Ameningen, during the Bachrittertage 2016, if I am interested in participating in the 5th Mittelaltertag Sargans 2017 (Switzerland).

I’ve been very honoured by this invitation and having the possibility to participate in such a high class event made me very excited. Therefore together with my family, and a bunch of equipment, I headed for Switzerland on last friday. Luckily I received one of the few places under a roof and therefore did not need all my camping equipment including sail and tent (I am very gratefull for that!).

On saturday morning we set off from our appartment to Sargans to build up my small workshop. I also wanted to start a new pair of kids shoes for my son.

A small selection of shoes made by myself, last and different kinds of vegetable tanned leather.

My son is now old enough to receive his first own garment. And as a proud shoemaker it is a must have that he receives a pair of propper shoes! So let’s start working!

No slacking arround. At first I needed to cut out the uppers.

While working I tried to answer all the questions from the visitors and other participants in detail and to their full satisfaction. Hopefully I have been successfull doing that. At least no one tried tossing me into the fountain….but maybe… it was a little bit hot. So this would not have been the worst thing (I’m not complaining!).

There have been many different craftsmen showing their work like patens maker, turner, potter, carpenters, knife grinder, a smith, salt traders, scriptorium, cooks and many more. Much more craftsmen then on an average medieval market with 3 times more participants! All had a reason to give their best: Count Hartman of Sargans-Werdenberg was attending the market to check on the crafts and the quality of their products. Really impressive sight. Sadly my “job” does not allow such a nice looking garment.

Count Hartman of Sargans-Werdenberg. Nice hat!

It was over all a very nice event and you can see the hard work of the organization trying to show how a market could have looked in 1267. Hopefully I am allowed to participate again in 2018 on the next market in Sargans!
